| Crochet Cabriolet Stitch Guide ~ Page One Diagrams were taken from very, very old books so as not to infringe on copyrights. I am looking for good diagrams I can add to this and use freely. Many small graphics! Please wait for the upload.
To make it easier for the beginner, I am not using abbreviations in the following examples.
Afghan Stitch 1 After making the chain of desired length, pull up a loop in each chain across, keeping them all on the hook. Half of first row is now done. |
Afghan Stitch 2 The second half of the first row: Yarn over hook and draw through two loops across to end. | Afghan Stitch 3 Row two and each succeeding row: place hook under the front post of the second stitch, pull up a loop, continuing across, keeping all loops on the hook. Then complete each row by yarn over hook and draw through two loops across. |
Afghan Stitch 4 Do not forget the last stitch (pictured above). If you do, your piece will begin to get smaller and smaller as you work. A good idea is to begin by counting stitches until you get the feel of the piece you are working on. | Increase To increase in the afghan stitch, draw up a loop in the chain stitch between the vertical bars.
| Decrease To decrease in the afghan stitch, insert hook under two vertical bars and draw up one loop.
| | | | | Single Crochet Insert hook in stitch, yarn over hook and pull through stitch (2 loops now on hook), yarn over hook and pull through both loops on hook. | Half Double Crochet Yarn over hook once, insert hook in stitch; yarn over hook and pull through stitch (3 loops now on hook), yarn over hook and pull through all 3 loops on hook. | | | Double Crochet Yarn over hook once, insert hook in stitch; yarn over hook and pull through stitch (3 loops now on hook), * yarn over hook and pull through 2 loops on hook; repeat from * once more. | Triple Crochet Yarn over hook twice, insert hook in stitch; yarn over hook and pull through stitch (4 loops now on hook), * yarn over hook and pull through 2 loops on hook; repeat from * twice more.
| | | Double Triple Crochet Yarn over hook 3 times, insert hook in stitch; yarn over hook and pull through stitch (5 loops now on hook), * yarn over hook and pull through 2 loops on hook; repeat from * 3 times more. | Triple Triple Crochet Yarn over hook 4 times, insert hook in stitch; yarn over hook and pull through stitch (6 loops now on hook), * yarn over hook and pull through 2 loops on hook; repeat from * 4 times more.
| | | Slip Stitch Insert hook in stitch, yarn over hook and pull through stitch and loop on hook. | Chain Stitch This is the basic foundation for most crochet. Once the chain is begun, yarn over hook and pull through loop on hook.
| | | Loop Explanations Throughout patterns you will be given instructions as to which loop to place your hook under. Above demonstrates them clearly.
| Post Stitch For some stitches you will be instructed to place your hook around a post (either from the front or back). The graphic above demonstrates them both clearly.
| | | Back Ridge This is simply an illustration so that you can see what is referred to when a pattern speaks of the "back ridge."
| Popcorn Stitch Above is a double crochet popcorn stitch: double crochet in 4th chain from hook on foundation chain. Chain 1, 5 double crochet in next chain. Remove hook from loop remaining on hook. Insert hook (as shown above) in the chain stitch preceding the 5 double crochet group, catch dropped loop with hook and draw it through the chain stitch. Pull tight. One popcorn stitch made. The loop that was just drawn through the chain stitch is the joining loop of the popcorn stitch. As you work with this in patterns, you will find there are many variations and most pattern designers illustrate this stitch very clearly.
| | | Cluster ~ Example 1 Keeping last loop of each stitch on hook, work specified number of stitches in same space or stitch; yarn over hook and pull through all loops on hook.
| Cluster ~ Example 2 Another example of the cluster stitch. In this case there are two stitches in each cluster and matching chain stitches on top to keep the piece even. | | | Waffle Stitch To practice: make a foundation chain of 21 stitches (multiples of 4 + 1). Double crochet in 4th chain from hook and in each chain across. Chain 1, turn. Picking up the front loop only of each stitch, single crochet in first 3 double crochet, * chain 1, skip next stitch, single crochet in next 3 double crochet. Repeat from * across, ending with chain 1, skip next stitch, single crochet in last 2 double crochet and in top of turning chain. A ridge has been made on right side. Chain 3, turn. Working through both loops of each stitch, skip first single crochet, double crochet in next 2 single crochet, * make a triple crochet around the bar (post) of the free stitch directly below next chain 1 space; skip the chain 1 space, double crochet in next 3 single crochet. Repeat from * across, Chain 1, turn. Repeat these steps until desired length. Fasten off.
| V-Stitch To practice: Make a foundation chain of 20 stitches (multiples of 4). In 5th chain from hook, make double crochet, chain 3, double crochet. One V stitch made. Skip next 3 chain, in next chain make double crochet, chain 3, and double crochet. Another V stitch made. Repeat this step across chain to within last 3 chain. Skip next 2 chain, double crochet in last chain. Chain 3, turn. In the chain 3 space of next V stitch make double crochet, chain 3, and double crochet. One V stitch over V stitch made. Repeat this step in each V stitch space across row. Double crochet in top of turning chain, chain 3, turn. Repeat these steps for desired length. Fasten off. There are variation of the V stitch, but again, they are usually very well illustrated and/or explained in most quality patterns. | | | Whipstitch 1 This is one example of the use of whipstitch to join (such as grannie squares) going under both loops of the stitches.
| Whipstitch 2 This is an example of going under just the back loop of the stitch to join. Each has a different effect on your finished product. What you are making will determine which is best to use. Patterns will also give instructions and make recommendations.
| | | Loop Stitch To practice: Cut a piece of cardboard 1 inch square. Make a foundation chain. 1. Single crochet in 2nd. chain from hook. 2. Draw loop on hook up and onto cardboard. Tighten loop slightly so that it will not slip off cardboard. Be sure the cardboard does not buckle. One loop stitch made. 3. Insert hook in next stitch and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through loop on hook, and repeat step above (placing on cardboard). Another loop stitch made. 4. Repeat Step 3. across foundation chain, slipping a few of the loops toward beginning of row off cardboard when cardboard becomes crowded. Be sure to leave at least 3 loops on cardboard at end of row. 5. Turn. Insert hook at top of first loop then draw a loop through first loop, chain 1 very tightly, remove all loops from cardboard, make a single crochet in each loop across row. Chain 1, turn. 6. Single crochet in first single crochet then repeat Step 2, now repeat Step 4 in each remaining single crochet (instead of foundation chain) across row. 7. Repeat Step 5 and 6 for desired length. Fasten off.
|
Knot Stitch To practice: Make a foundation chain of 18 stitches (multiple of 4 plus 2). 1. Single crochet in 2nd. chain from hook. 2. Draw loop on hook up to measure 1/2 inch (or length specified in the directions). 3. Yarn over and draw through loop on hook, insert hook between the 1/2 inch loop and the single strand between it (first graphic example on left above) and draw a loop through (2 loops on hook); yarn over and draw through all loops on hook. One knot stitch made. 4. Repeat Step 2 (middle graphic example above). 5. Repeat Step 3. Two knot stitches made. 6. Skip next 3 chain on foundation chain and make a single crochet in next chain. One knot stitch loop made. 7. Repeat Steps 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 to end of foundations chain. 8. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 three times (3 knot stitches), turn. 9. Working over next knot stitch loop, insert hook between loop and single strand of first knot stitch (A on far right example graphic above) and make a single crochet, now single crochet between loop and single crochet strand of second knot stitch (B on far right example graphic above). 10. Make 2 knot stitches, then repeat Step 9. Repeat Step 10 to end of row. Repeat Step 8 to turn. 11. Repeat Steps 9 and 10 for desired length. Fasten off.
